Sheena Hui

Artists in Residence Series
WOW, World of Wine | August 7 | 18h30

Sheena Hui is a musician from Hong Kong. Primarily a pianist, she has performed dozens of solo and chamber recitals in Hong Kong and across the United States, making her concerto debut with the Claremont Concert Orchestra in 2018. She enjoys programming music by Chinese and contemporary composers, having performed with OSSIA New Music and premiered works by composers such as Gao Ping, Oliver Dubon, and Sophia Ouyang. Sheena has a particular interest in academic fields of music. She has been working with the University of Michigan Gershwin Institute to edit upcoming critical edition scores of George and Ira Gershwin’s compositions, including the two-piano scores of An American in Paris, Concerto in F, and a handful of Gershwin songs. She is currently writing a dissertation on the compositional style of Alexander Borodin with the goal of completing a number of unfinished works by Borodin.

Having benefitted from a lineage of remarkable teachers in lessons, classrooms and through various media, Sheena is profoundly aware of her responsibility to share the artistry and knowledge she has inherited. She has founded the Athenaeum Concert Series in the United States where guest artists are invited to present cross-disciplinary lecture-recitals; its inaugural season this fall is unified by the theme Renewal from Ashes – War, Destruction, Remembrance, Peace. Sheena has also taught at a number of music festivals such as the Palmetto International Piano Festival in the United States, and Opus 1 Summerfest and Choir Camp! in Hong Kong. She is currently a teaching assistant in music theory and piano literature at the Eastman School of Music in addition to working with the Eastman piano technicians.

Sheena is a doctoral student at the Eastman School of Music where she studies piano with Natalya Antonova and Ran Dank; she previously worked with Logan Skelton at the University of Michigan and Gayle Blankenburg at Claremont McKenna College. Sheena is endlessly inspired by the pursuit of philosophical, scientific, and artistic truth.
