DESCRIPTION

The concerts of the Artist Residency Series are the culmination of the participation of tomorrow’s music stars- young and brilliant pianists who come to the festival to work with the artist faculty of Porto Pianofest and prepare for tours, recordings, important concerts, and to make their art known to the world.

Pianists are chosen, from all continents, to perform in a solo recital and share their unique musical ideas with our welcoming audience in Porto.

On August 7th at 13h00 at Museu Romântico, Korean pianist Hyunkyung Anais Ahn will perform a recital with works by Villa-Lobos, Chopin, and Granados.

Program Notes from the Performer:

The recital will be opened with Villa-Lobos’ Hommage a Chopin to show my recital theme. For this program, I decided to show Fantaisie op.49, which Chopin wrote 8 years before his death. I picked Escenas Romanticas by Granados as one of the unique repertoires I want to introduce to my audience. It was published after his death, and his students edited the music. However, the last movement is almost the same as Chopin’s Andante Spianato. It is all connected with Chopin’s name and also genres. Hommage a Chopin will represents Nocturne and Ballade and Escenas Ramanticas including Mazurkas, Berceuse and an epilogue with andante spianato. During the last few years, I had to think about what my strength can be as a performer. As a result, I ended up with the thoughts of a “storyteller pianist,” which means I want my audience to be able to find the relationships of each composer, rather than remembering just a composer and their music. People inspire each other no matter where they are or what they are doing. When I find out how so many composers learned from each other, it always reminds me I always have things to learn from people around me. My first recital program based on this idea was with E.T.A Hoffmann’s piano sonata along with Mozart’s Piano Sonata and Schumann’s Fantasiestücke. After my recitals and while I was learning, it seemed like my recital program gave my audience and myself some new ideas and inspirations. Therefore, I prepared the second themed recital as "Chopin" with a hope to give inspirations to whoever comes to my recital.
