Scriabin's Preludes open the evening with concentrated lyric intensity, followed by Schumann's Fantasie in C major, one of the great outpourings of the piano literature, moving between ecstasy and desolation with barely a seam. Rachmaninoff's Preludes bring their characteristic shadows and sweep before César Franck's Prelude, Chorale and Fugue closes the program with cumulative grandeur — a work that channels the Baroque through a deeply Romantic sensibility.
