Porto Pianofest founder and director Nuno Marques presents the release of his latest album, Penas de Amor: Fados for Piano — a landmark recording of nearly forgotten works at the intersection of two worlds: the concert hall and the streets of Portugal. The album centers on the Nine Fados for Piano by Alexandre Rey Colaço and the beloved Fado Burnay by Eduardo Burnay, two pillars of Portuguese piano music whose rare solo compositions distill the voice, poetry, and guitars of traditional fado into an idiomatic and sophisticated pianistic language. For Marques, the project is deeply personal — a reckoning with a genre whose complex history kept it at arm's length, and a homecoming made possible, as he describes it, only by distance. Penas de Amor — translatable as both "love's sorrows" and "love's feathers" — captures that duality precisely: music steeped in saudade, in fatalism and longing, yet carried with a lightness that keeps it alive.
