Program Notes from the Artist:
This program focuses on some of the 19th century titans of music: Brahms, Liszt and Wagner. Usually, I am someone who tries to diversify my repertoire as much as possible and I can say that people who know my playing, know I often choose to play unheard of composers or underplayed pieces. When I do play composers or pieces that are much more popular, it is because I feel a true connection with the work. This is especially how I feel towards this program. Although I am sure the public will be very familiar with Brahms and Liszt, these particular works are not so popular and so one of my goals with this program is to share more works that the audience might not be so familiar with, even if they know the composers well. These two works compliment and contrast to each other quite well. Even though these works were written not so far apart, they show the huge diversity of styles within the Romantic period. The Brahms sonata portrays his traditionalist style and influence of the Classical period, yet we can still hear his unique voice. This is followed by Liszt's transcription of Wagner's Tannhäuser Overture which displays the progressive style of the 19th century. Liszt certainly succeeds in creating an orchestra with just one piano and this results in a glorifying end to the program.
