DESCRIPTION
The concerts of the Artist Residency Series are the culmination of the participation of tomorrow’s music stars- young and brilliant pianists who come to the festival to work with the artist faculty of Porto Pianofest and prepare for tours, recordings, important concerts, and to make their art known to the world. Six pianists are chosen, from all continents, to perform in a solo recital and share their unique musical ideas with our welcoming audience in Porto.
This single ticket includes entrance to the full day of Artist Residency Concerts for August 6th, with recitals at 18h00 and 19h30. Join us for one concert that evening, or both!
Vassilis Gavvaris, a 25-year-old pianist of Greek and Cypriot descent, is distinguished by his energetic, imaginative, and expressive performances. He recently graduated with a Master of Music from Conservatorium Maastricht, where he studied under Dr. Katia Veekmans. He previously graduated with highest honours from The American College of Greece, where he studied with Dr. Tatiana Papageorgiou as a Frances Rich Scholar, and earned his National Piano Soloist Diploma with First Prize from the Panarmonio Conservatory of Athens.
A postgraduate scholar of the Leventis Foundation and the Union of Greek Shipowners, Vassilis has received numerous distinctions, including the Audience Prize at the Maastricht Music Award 2025 and the Emerging Soloist Award 2024 from the Gina Bachauer International Music Association. He has also won prizes at the Filonas, Chaerogiorgou-Sigara, and Montecatini piano competitions.

Program Note from the Artist:
This recital explores journeys of imagination, landscape, and identity. It opens with two dramatic masterpieces: Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 2 and Liszt’s Après une lecture du Dante, works that transform the piano into a vehicle for powerful storytelling, moving between dramatic turbulence, lyricism, and transcendence.
At the center of the program stands Szymanowski’s Tantris le Bouffon from Masques, a work of dazzling virtuosity and theatrical fantasy. Inspired by literary and mythical worlds, it bridges the dramatic intensity of the opening works with the colorful imagery that follows.
The program then turns toward the Mediterranean, a region that forms a personal connection to my Greek–Cypriot heritage. Music by Theodorakis, Skalkottas, and Economou evokes the sea, dance, and cultural traditions of Greece and Cyprus, capturing both the beauty and resilience of communities shaped by maritime life.
The journey concludes in Portugal with selections from Óscar da Silva’s Páginas Portuguesas, linking Mediterranean sensibilities to Portuguese landscapes and nostalgia. Together, these works create a musical voyage across different cultures, united by vivid imagery, rich histories, and a shared sense of place, unified by the sea.
